Music (In Harmony)
Music at The Beacon
The Beacon is proudly partnered with In Harmony Liverpool, an initiative launched in 2009 to transform children’s lives through orchestral music. In Harmony aims to enhance pupils’ confidence, well-being, and resilience by providing them with opportunities to learn, perform, and collaborate with professional musicians and artists from around the world. The programme envisions a healthier, higher-achieving future for North Liverpool through music.
All pupils at The Beacon receive weekly musicianship lessons, developing foundational skills like sight singing and composition. Beginning in Year 3, each child is also given an instrument—starting with strings, then potentially moving to wind or brass in Year 4—completely free of charge. This robust musical education fulfils and extends the National Curriculum, providing pupils with top-tier tuition, a wide range of instruments, and rich performance opportunities.
The curriculum explores genres, allowing pupils to explore classical, pop, traditional, and contemporary music. Creativity is nurtured through composition and ensemble playing, ensuring pupils engage with music from both a performance and creation perspective.
Performances are a central component of In Harmony. Across all Liverpool sites, In Harmony has showcased over 300 pupil performances to an audience of 42,000. Each year, Beacon pupils have the thrilling chance to perform on stage at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall alongside the Philharmonic Orchestra.
From EYFS through Year 6, pupils progress from musicianship classes to focused instrument lessons and ensemble practice. In Year 6, pupils explore creative music, including music technology, local music studies, and composition. Additionally, pupils may join instrument-specific clubs as part of our Inspire Plus extracurricular provision, advancing their skills and expanding their repertoire.
You can find all current Knowledge Organisers as PDFs on each class page.
