Modern Foreign Languages

Bienvenue !

Learning a foreign language is a liberation from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures. A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world.

At The Beacon CE Primary School, children across the school learn French and receive a lesson each week from our MFL trained specialist or a native French speaker FLA. This learning is then further reinforced and embedded by the class teacher and may take the format of several smaller lessons or embedding through daily routines e.g. answering the register with newly acquired vocabulary. Language lessons are taught using a variety of resources and activities and students develop their knowledge and understanding of French through listening, speaking, reading and writing at an appropriate level with a focus on practical communication. This language learning experience will lay the foundations for further foreign language study at key stage 3 and beyond.

Learning an additional language helps to develop students’ listening skills, problem solving and critical thinking, whilst also improving memory and boosting confidence.
