Cookery at North Liverpool Academy

Over the past few weeks, Year 4 have been attending North Liverpool Academy to learn how to cook and prepare savoury dishes. So far, we have cooked chicken fried rice, pizza and mini egg tarts. Please have a look at our pictures below...

The new changes in the Design and Technology National Curriculum have put an emphasis on “Cooking and Nutrition. Therefofre there has been significant changes where KS2 are required to fully explore a variety of skills and knowledge related to food.

Year 4 have had the opportunity over the past few weeks to:

* Learn how food is grown, reared, caught in the UK and the wider world.

* Learn how the seasons affect food availability.

* Learn how food is processed into ingredients that can be eaten or used in dishes.

* Learn how to cook a variety of predominantly savoury dishes using a heat source.

* Take part in fun practical sessions in a safe environment.

* Demonstrate a range of preparation techniques such as peeling, chopping, slicing, grating, mixing, spreading, kneading and baking.

* Gain a basic understanding of the eat well plate and how that contributed to a healthy balanced diet.

* Adapt and change a recipe to change the sensory appeal.

* Gain an understanding that different foods have different substances that are needed for health – such as water, fibre etc.

We are excited to continue learning these skills over the next few weeks too!
